Pumpkin Seed Activities for First Grade

We began our lesson today reading my favorite non-fiction text about pumpkins: Pumpkin Circle by George Levenson.  Very poetic and informative.  The pictures are absolutely wonderful, too!

Then, we tasted our toasted pumpkin seeds.  Mmmmm!  Then we did a little pumpkin seed pre-write as a whole class, and the kiddos completed an individual response sheet that when along with it…

Then it was time to graph whether or not we liked the taste of our toasted pumpkin seeds…

Next, the kiddos completed individual graphs, colored in a little pumpkin seed packet, and, and wrote about their pumpkin seed experience…

I wish I was a pumpkin seed because I want to see the inside of a pumpkin.  Too.  Stinkin. CUTE!

You can get copies of all the activity sheets by clicking on the pics below :)

I hope it’s not too late for y’all to use it!  If not now, maybe next year!

Have a great night!  Happy *almost* Thursday!!!!!

Hi Abby,
We just returned from the pumpkin patch today. These will be perfect to use tomorrow..great timing. I just posted a unit for The Ugly Pumpkin on TPT. It takes you from Halloween into Thanksgiving and teaches a wonderful lesson about acceptance. It's a very sweet rhyming story. Thank you for these goodies.

Hey Abby! I LOVE all of your ideas! Thanks for sharing them with all of us! For some reason, I can't get these pumpkin documents to "open." :( Any chance you could post them on your TPT store? I am able to access your stuff from there without any problems. Thanks for any help you can give!

Abby I LOVE all of your ideas, units on TPT, freebies etc and I am ALWAYS reading ur blog(s) but NEVER have time to respond due to the madness of the job...until today! Anyway, I am a NYC school teacher and am blessed to have 28 (yes, TWENTY-EIGHT) lovely 1st graders. I have used many of your lessons with them in the past and we love graphing however, we never have enough boxes for all 28 students on the rare occasions when we do need to fill in all 28 of them. Would it be possible for you to either create another pumpkin seed data sheet that goes up to 28 or email me the template and I'll play around with it to make it fit 28? If not totally understand.
Thanks for always sharing such wonderful ideas. :)

Whenever I try to load the pdf, it blurs out your questions for the data sheet! I just have black boxes instead. Have you heard of anyone else experiencing the same thing? It's super cute, but I can't get it to work for me!

I purchased your Candy Corn Bandit activity and did it with my class on Halloween. You do amazing work. My kiddos had a blast. They talked about it all week. Just purchased your Oh So Thankful! Can't wait to use it.
