FLASH SALE & Descriptive Writing Activity!

Happy Weekend, Sweet Friends!
I am in a celebratory mood today because the Michigan Wolverines won {again!}, I went on a date with B {long overdue!} and I didn’t have to work at school once this weekend!  I think I’m finally getting back into the swing of things.  It’s about dang time :)
We ate at a fantastic local Chinese restaurant and couldn’t help but stop to pose for this pic!  Ha!
Back to things school related…
This past week, our reading series focused on descriptive writing.  It encouraged the students to write about a character from a story, and while that’s all fine and dandy, I really think 6-year-olds (and older!) really need to experience something before they can write about it.  Thus, I created my own series of lessons to support descriptive writing.
So, I started out the first lesson by showing them a decorative gift bag, that they had to describe.  We discussed descriptive words (words that tell more; adjectives) and charted our answers on a whole group graphic organizer.

The students then completed a follow-up activity where they decorated and described the bag…
And what was inside the bag, you ask?

Omiword, we had about 12 kinds of fun eating and experiencing Pop Rocks!  Our lessons about descriptive writing continued all week long, culminating in the students writing descriptive sentences {with the help of sentence frames} and creating a darling little art project.

If you’d like to check out this activity and see the lesson plans, more pictures, and response sheets that we used to help guide our writing, check out Let’s Get Pop Rockin’ with Descriptive Writing! at my TpT store found HERE.  The best part, it’s completely adaptable for grades K-5, and incorporates adjectives and similes, too :)  Regularly, it sells for $4.50, however, since I’m in such a celebratory mood today and because this Facebookless girl had no idea about the one a few weeks ago, let’s have a…
From now until 9pm EST today, Sunday, September 18, everything in my store is on sale for $3.00!
Have a wonderful Sunday, root on your favorite Pro football team, and get your shop on!!!

My kids are so excited and my principal had nothing but good to say! Thank you so much for this great and creative unit-it will be such a fun way to teach adjectives!

Abby- Thank you SO much for this amazing unit. I started the unit this week. Today was the day the Pop Rocks were introduced. You should have seen their cute little faces-eyes bulging and all... I think I have some budding experts in descriptive writing after these lessons. Thanks again:) -Jaime
