School ROCKS!

I have never really had a "themed" classroom before. I've always decorated with fabrics and colors and the occasional patterned bulletin board border, but never with a cohesiveness that continued through everything from the bulletin boards to labels to my classroom management system.  This year, with a gobzillion sparks of inspiration lighting a fire in my teaching heart, I found that theming my room was going to be not only useful but ALL. KINDS. OF. FUN!

However, it took me awhile to find the perfect fit.  I first thought I'd go Hollywood like Cara, and then I thought I'd be all piratey like Deanna.  Then, I nixed both of those idea and recruited my family members to help me dream up the right one.  My mom suggested The Wizard of Oz since I already had a unit prepared for it and my future class is going to see it at the theatre in October.  I really couldn't come to terms with "Mullins' Munchkins," though.  So, sitting on the porch at my parents' house, my sister, Aubrea, suggested School House Rock.

Um, hello, I LOVE IT

Totally smitten with Beth Newingham's classroom, I knew I could add my personal touch to make it a great fit for my firsties.  And it was born:

I'm aware I'm not reinventing the wheel or discovering fire here, but there was just something about this theme that spoke to me.  Possibly the fact that the feather extensions I'm planning to get put in at my next hair appointment will fit in seamlessly.  Steven Tyler, anyone?

Anyway, I've spent a great deal of time crafting labels, bulletin board ideas, take-home folder covers, etc. over the past several days, and I want to make them all available to you here.  I have no intention of selling them for profit, so if you'd like to jump in on a rockstar classroom theme, help yourself.  Borrow as much or as little as you'd like.  They'll all be available over the next few weeks as I put my classroom together.  Which, as a matter of fact, I am starting tomorrow.  {Eeeeeeh!}

Click on the image below to view or download the take-home folder binder insert I'll be using. Also, it's not specific to 1st grade - the document contains the same insert for kindergarten through 5th :)

Are you rockin' out in your classroom this year?  I'd love to see your ideas, too!

Rock on, friends!!!

{PS.  Teacher Week is in the works! If you're unfamiliar, this was a week long teaching extravaganza that I hosted on my other blog, Babbling Abby, before The Inspired Apple came to be.  If you go back and review the mid-to-late August archives from 2010, you'll see what I'm talking about.

 Due to the fact that the blogging world has absolutely *exploded* with educators in the past year, I'm a little concerned about linkies taking up bandwidth and overloading my generic Blogger server or making it desperately slow.  If anyone has any suggestions about this, please email me at babblingabby(at)gmail(dot)com.}

GREAT THEME!!! I've had a fish theme for YEARS. This year I almost want to switch to that cute monster stuff you see at the teacher store. But I can't bring myself to change everything. Plus, instead of apples I get beachy like gifts. Which I LOVE!!!

Not sure if I want to admit this, but I just had a GIANT "blonde" moment! Totally thought you were going to theme your classroom around rocks...yes, as in boulders, pebbles, etc...!! I was extremely interested to see how that was going to work! HAHA!!! Guess that's what summer brain does to a girl! Love the idea!! Can't wait to see pictures!

I love your school rocks theme but I learned something very disturbing during one of my recent salon visits. I pay a ridiculous amount of money on my hair (it's my guilty pleasure) and am at the salon every month. Just a few visits ago I noticed that many of the stylists were no longer sporting their feather extensions. When I asked my stylist(also the owner) why they weren't wearing them anymore, he proceeded to tell me that the salon no longer sells or supports the sales of the feathers because they found out that because the demand for feather extensions is so high right now, that companies are actually mass producing chickens to rip the feathers out of and then they are immediately mass killing these chickens once their feathers are stripped. They were extremely disturbed by this, and decided that as a very reputable salon, they could no longer support this very cruel fad. I was wearing feather extensions at the time I heard the news and asked my stylist to please take them out. Now, I am no overly crazy animal activist here, but I do believe that as educators we are role models, and shouldn't support anything that isn't very appropriate. Since removing my feathers a few months ago, I have noticed that they fad has really died down here in Utah and that many people have removed the feathers from their hair due to hearing the same info. I did. I hope that this will encourage you to do some research of your own to decided if feather extensions are a good choice for you. Maybe some synthetic colored extensions, or a naturally molted cool feather earring may be a better choice :)

Yay for Teacher Week! I searched on your other blog *forever* last week to find last years posts to get inspired for back to school ideas. I don't know anything about how to link it up or anything, but I can't wait for it! You always have the BEST ideas! :) :)

Fab idea! I'm so BORING. This will be my third year teaching and I just don't have the creativity/time/energy to come up with a theme. Maybe next year?

The discipline system at our Pk-3 campus has a "Merkel Badgers Rock" theme and ROCK stands for:
Responisble
Orderly
Considerate
Kind

We hand out "ROCK" tickets when kids are caught being good and they all go in a bucket and on Mondays our principal draws about 30 names and the kiddos get extra recess. The "Rock" tickets have a duplicate and they take home a copy so parents can see that their kids our "Rocking". First grade has a cute bulletin board with a rock star theme and we have AR reading shirts when kids get 100 points that have a "First Grade Rocks" theme. I would have to take pictures when I am at school but could certainly do that for you if you are interested. (Sorry this was lengthy)

One of the teachers at my old school had a couple of inflatable guitars and had each student take a picture "rocking out" on it for in the hall at the beginning of the year. It was so cute!

I also JUST had the idea that on the clip chart, students who make it to the top a certain number of times could go "gold," or "platinum" like records!

Abby,
Check out this blog....you will love her AND she has a tutorial on making a feather headband that looks like the extensions! Maybe Steven Tyler has a headband too! Lol!

I love your Rock theme! I don't know if you have a Christmas Tree Shop around you or not, but I immediately thought of you today as I looked through their flyer. They have all kinds of guitar items including a guitar lamp, guitar-shaped pillows, and guitar-shaped collage frames for all those wonderful pictures of your firsties. I can't wait to see how you continue to decorate your room!

LOVE the R.O.C.K.S. acronym. I used to use a H.E.R.O. Binder for take home in the intermediate grades, but want to change it with my change to first grade and to fit my new District's mascot - the tiger.

After harassing all my friends, I am going to borrow your R.O.C.K. and my binder will be "Tigers R.O.C.K." Come check it out on my new blog mrsbrownsbookbuddies.blogspot.com

Where did you find the "guitar" type font? I'm doing a rock and roll theme for my 2nd grade class too!

Someone else might have commented this already, but did you know that there is a CD of music called First Grade Rocks: Smart Songs for Super Kids? It's by Lauren Mayer, and I found it at our library. It's got all kinds of great songs about things we learn in first grade, and the kids love it!
